THE ‘CALL BEFORE CONVEY’ PROJECT RECEIVES HIGH COMMENDATION AT THE 2023 HSJ PATIENT SAFETY AWARDS

Hampshire Hospital Foundation Trust, in coordination with the South Central Ambulance Service and Southern Health Foundation Trust are delighted to have received a high commendation for the Call Before Convery Project in the category “Urgent and Emergency Care Safety Initiative of the year” at this year’s 2023 HSJ Patient Safety Awards which recognises safety, culture and positive experience in patient care.

The Call Before Convey, is a service that encompasses as part of the Clinical Communications Centre, Virtual Ward Services and is continuously being supported by the Telemedicine Services.

Our Team made their way to Manchester Central to attend the 2-day Annual HSJ Awards event which took place last 18 and 19 of September. Representing the team from left to right: Sarah Noble (ED Consultant), Wendy Stonehouse (SCAS), Naomi Ratcliff (Southern Health), Rebecca Housley (Nurse Consultant), Mary Tutton (Lead Clinical Assessor), Paul Flattery (Highly Specialised Pharmacist)

The project placed a robust single point of access – a clinical communications centre (CCC) – for ambulances, GPs and community teams and onsite from our emergency departments, with various pathway options that lead to the most appropriate outcome for the patient:

  • ED attendance
  • Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) attendance
  • Direct Hospital admission
  • Virtual Ward
  • GP Management
  • Community care

The project has highlighted and made access to alternatives to emergency department admission simpler. It has improved usage of system resources and reduced redundancy/duplication of clinical tasks. It resulted to sustained reduction in ambulance hours lost due to queuing and made specialist clinical skills more accessible-ensuring value is added where it is most appropriate.

A big Congratulations to the team. It was a spectacular achievement indeed!
